The combination of dark storm clouds, blue sky and sun-baked landscape inspired this painting. The bright sunshine reflected by the grasslands creates a dramatic contrast with the blues and greys of the sky and clouds

The storm clouds take on an almost alien ship-like form, hanging over the land waiting to drop their payload and again in contrast the open yellow Free State fields are soft, inviting and peaceful.

The composition

The painting is divided into two distinct sections, sky and land. The clouds with their dramatic and deliberate angular shapes draw the viewer to the centre of the picture and are the main “object” or form of the painting. Jonathan Edwards
