A doodle to a six-panel abstract landscape print

What started out as an A6 doodle became the Crown abstract landscape print.

The idea was to create an abstract print that would cover a large area of an interior wall, but not as a single sheet or print.

The result is a six-panel, abstract landscape print

The doodle was scanned and formed the basis of the composition. I then used extensive layers and different types of brushes to complete the artwork in digital format.

This is not a reproduction but a digital abstract print produced directly in an image editor using a tablet.

The file dimension and final print size are 1785mm (H) x 1682mm (W).

The choice of blue as a predominant colour was somewhat accidental, but I would say that the African sky (dark storm or late evening colours) is a source of inspiration and the reason for its use. Blue skies are broken into sections by lines and forms to give a dramatic circular movement culminating in the centre with a “sun” or yellow ochre organic accent. The red lines on the top sections are mountain-range-like objects or silhouettes on the crown. The red diagrams continue the red accent that is picked up in strategic areas on the picture plane.

The challenge with Crown abstract landscape print was to work on the whole print and then continue to work on the six panels independently to make sure that each of the panel’s compositions are strong independently and still form a unit when placed together.

The final print has answered all my expectations of composition, colour and display needs both as a single print and as six individual prints. Jonathan Edwards
